Granite Shoals History – A Quick Introduction

Granite Shoals got its name from the granite shoals (sandbars) that used to be visible in the Colorado River before the construction of Wirtz Dam and Lake LBJ. Granite Shoals was originally developed as a lake resort subdivision, but it incorporated as a city in 1966 and began with a tiny population of 300 residents. By the year 2000, the population had grown to over 2000 residents and now has a population just over 5,000. The main industry is granite mining. The town is a popular destination for outdoor and water enthusiasts, and you’ll find a number of houseboats in the area.
